Dehradun Public School ' [DPS] is situated in a small village called Kandoli. The school is set in beautiful and peaceful surroundings amidst the tranquility of woods and is about 15 km west from the city center.
There is widespread poverty in the villages around the school. This is mainly attributed to the backwardness of the area. People from these villages primarily belong to scheduled and backward classes. Due to lack of awareness, people do not lay emphasis on education, proper nutrition, sanitation and hygiene resulting in poor health especially of the children. The main occupation of the villagers in the region is agriculture. People cultivate their small land holdings which are heavily dependant on rainfall. Some have jobs and the rest are mostly engaged in manual labour.
The school made its modest beginnings in the year 1994 under a tree with five children. From the very beginning KHW tried to emphasize on education especially for the girl child. In the beginning this was not very easy and the levels of motivation and interest were very discouraging. Getting children to come to school was an uphill task.
Eventually as time passed the community noticed the positive impact the school had on the lives of their children and more and more families came forward to enroll. The community's trust in KHW started to grow and they appealed that the school be upgraded. Thus, in consonance with the need of the community KHW undertook and completed the construction of its present school building block in 1997.
Today, there is a constant increase in the number of children in the school. There are now 270 children. A team of very hardworking and committed young people are contributing towards its growth and development. The school maintains fourteen regular teaching and ten non teaching staff.
DPS does not only aspire to take care of children's educational needs but it has a holistic approach to their upbringing. The school provides nutritious midday meals to children. Regular health check ups to monitor the health and development of the child. Children are not only taught to excel in their studies but are also encouraged in other activities such as cultural programs, music, painting, stitching and embroidery. The school organizes educational excursions and insists on an all-round development of the child. The children of the school are encouraged to have respect for the environment, dignity of labor, importance of high moral standards and are taught to be tolerant and respectful of other religions. KHW also helps and supports families with problems which might affect the well-being of the child.
The School is currently up to class 8 and will very soon complete the formalities of its affiliation to Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi , and start classes 9 and 10. Keeping in mind with the up gradation of the school the school's infrastructure is also being upgraded. DPS has a well equipped computer lab and a well stocked and growing library. From July this year DPS has introduced a 32 seater bus, for its children and staff.
DPS is committed to providing quality education in a quality environment to children from underprivileged backgrounds. It is our belief that a sound, value based, holistic education is the first stepping stone to a fulfilling, successful and productive life which contributes significantly to community and nation building.
The community, elected representatives, officials and donors have deeply appreciated KHW's initiatives through DPS. The Joint Director Education, Garhwal Division,, Government of Uttaranchal wrote after inspecting DPS on 15th December 2005 - “ Really this institution is progressive. The teachers and also the management are very sincere. The campus and the site is very impressive.''
