24 th September, 2003 the people of Uttarkashi braced themselves for a disaster that would change the lives for many. A major landslide swept away houses and destroyed many. Families got displaced from their houses as they were still under the threat of the landslide. The children in the families were worst affected, they were traumatized during the whole ordeal as not only education suffered since they stopped going to school and became weak owing to poor availability of food.
Responding to the situation in the area KHW-India on 10 October, 2003 started Joy Clubs for the children of the region in partnership with GSVSS and SASA. The activities undertaken included story telling, painting, dancing, games and each child was given a nutritious meal during the Joy Club hours. Apart from the Joy Clubs warm clothes were distributed to the affected community. Through our interventions we touched the lives of 206 families.
