FLASH FLOODS IN GARHWAL HILLS

Three villages in Budakedar area of Tehri Garhwal were destroyed by the onslaught of flash floods in Summer of 2002. Most of the victims were either buried under the debris of the landslides which destroyed hundreds of houses or swept away by flash floods. Relief operations were being hampered by continuous downpour.

Our response was to provide immediate relief material by providing the affected community with food and temporary shelter. After the situation was assessed with the help a grass root NGO named Lok Jeevan Nirman headed by Shri. Bihari Lal working in the area for several years. As per the assessment the watermills which were a lifeline to the community of the area had been damaged and required immediate attention. Thus these destroyed water mills were repaired and new mills were added.

Natural calamities bring with them, not only a sense of displacement and economic loss but adversely affects the children of the community who are unable to cope with the stress of being displaced. Keeping this in mind, Joy Clubs were initiated which were children's clubs. The Joy clubs involved in several interesting activities, organized playgroups, were given toys to play, crayons and painting material to express themselves by painting pictures. These clubs were highly appreciated by the affected communities.
